If you want. In my opinion, the best place is an ice spike biome. No hostile mobs other than the skeletons that slow you down are able to spawn in that biome. Only other thing you gotta watch watch out for is a baby polar bear because adult polar bears will automatically aggro around them.

I’m a bit of a nomadic player, so I’d use this place as a stopping point to offload anything extra that I don’t need, or use it as a centralized hub for travelling through

I would love to build on a spot like that. Make some bridges off in other directions. Or build other houses on the river banks. It could look dope

Reasonably flat, cool scenery nearby, river nearby so you can use boats for fast early-game exploration.
I wouldn’t think twice, although, I usually sink the mineshaft first just to check the underground generation hasn’t stiffed me.
