I honestly thought it was made up lol. Apparently winter melon is one of the common names for the wax gourd. Much like pumpkin, it's used in savory and sweet dishes.

Anyways, I had to get up at 6:30 and ride the bus for two hours round trip to go to a doctor's appointment, so I'm going to get myself a treat at this boba place lol. Probably not the winter melon tea though, as interesting as it is

EDIT: Someone informed me it's actually powder melon in game, and it's description is definitely that of a fruit. For some reason, I misremembered it as winter melon.

EDIT 2: I've figured out the confusion. So, powdermelon is not analogous to any real world plant (like I initially assumed. I probably looked it up with the actual name at some point and couldn't find anything).

However, it does look similar to real life winter melon, which some species do have a blue tint with a waxy, kind of powdery looking exterior. So it probably is inspired by winter melon at least

  1. although, actual winter melons aren’t really grown in winter, they do look a little powdery, so i guess that’s why in the game it’s called powder melon?

  2. I learned about winter melons as a little kid when I read The Chinese Siamese Cat (the book the show Sagwa was based on). The three siblings are all named after melons: Donggua (winter melon), Xigua (watermelon), and Sagua (literally silly melon, but the book translated it as melon head 😂).

Winter Melon is great in chinese soups with egg strands – quite a mild, sweet taste; often cubed and has a soft mouth feel when cooked. It’s pretty common as a tea option in Asia – TCM suggests that it has cooling properties. My local bubble tea place serves it with lemon syrup and I’ll pair it with aloe vera during the summertime!

  4. Wintermelon tea was available at every boba tea shop in Taiwan when I lived there. It’s nice to see it show up at more places in the US now.

I especially like wintermelon lemonade with boba.
