It’s a mob farm. A pretty beefed up mob farm with luck increasing items hoiks for faster mob movement and NPCs for coins and a pylon.

Im so sorry to hear that , The build is a pretty high tech one-sided mob farm built for optimising the spawnrate of chaos elementals which rarely drop “rod of discord” a staff that lets you teleport, Your boyfriend did the build very well.
I’ve never made one personally but that looks like an afk underground hallow farm. Also sorry for your loss 🙁
I’m very sorry for your loss, i hope you can take time for yourself and also explore the game at your pace, hopefully it is a good remainder of him and his artistic, creative side. Maybe try to make a copy of the world, just to be safe
As many friends here mentioned it looks about some kind of farm, the biome it’s in is called underground hallow and the soul of light is very useful item for the beginning of hardmode. Reading your comment from prior, it seems he has spent plenty of time there, a row of banners hanging and rod of discord really show that as well

My condolences. This reminds me of a video I watched about how in games like Minecraft we build things for their own sake, and sometimes the creator is the only person who ever sees it, but in rare cases we can look back on these sandbox creations by a person who is no longer here and experience a sort of bizarre wonder. Hopefully you can learn more about his personal style throughout this exploration.

You’ve been told what it is already, so I’ll tell you how it works.
The lava is high enough to damage enemies, but not high enough to destroy items.
The enclosure protects the character from attacks that can’t pass through blocks.
The triangle shapes used to speed enemies into the smaller lava pond. Don’t know if that still works.
The length of the structure goes far enough to spawn enemies in the distance.
This farm could be improved further with conveyor belts, another lava platform on the right side, and the character equipping a stress ball to autoattack with a weapon that consumes no ammo or magic and goes through blocks.
