What’s Terraria Like for a Non-Gamer?

I managed to convince my wife to play Terraria and through her eyes we’ll see how not only a noob, but a non-gamer plays the game

  1. This has awoken a deep urge within me to introduce some of my friends to terraria, I have a feeling those 6 psychos would have a very similar experience to your wife's though. Although it would make for an amazing time and probably the goofiest time ever.

  2. I tried to teach my brother how to play terraria, and his only prior experience was playing Minecraft 7 or 8 years ago on our Xbox, and I never expected how much he would struggle with the basic controls as much as he did. He quit after like 20 minutes because he got stuck in a living tree and couldn't get back out.

  3. Ok kudos to you both. Her for being willing to go through this experiment, knowing people will be watching and judging, at least to some degree. That takes guts! It isn't easy to get in front of a bunch of diehards and flounder!

You, for navigating this in a way that keeps your marriage intact lol

  4. Congrats on the wife! I'm sure there's no end to the Borat "my wife" jokes. I actually came here to be critical, but I can't. Hear me out before downvoting. I dislike the whole entry into terraria series where you question how well it's made or if new players understand whats going on at all. However I got to looking around at the video statistics and it's one of your more popular video formats! I'm happy for you and it's a humbling reminder that just because I watch you and I don't like it, other people don't necessarily feel the same way. Perhaps its a good thing to shine a fresh NEW light on such an old game. I feel like without my early experiences with minecraft content (from creators that obviously all turned out to be bad people save for 1 or 2) id have been essentially lost in that game to simply due to lack of direction or crafting recipes (i started playing in 2010 during alpha). Terraria perhaps in hindsight has the same issue where it seems to obvious to veterans but we either have many hours in the game, or we've consumed much Terraria content (or both) and all the gaps in knowledge (except for some technical why this works how it does, lets look at the code) have mostly been filled. To to see this being played by not only someone inexperienced with the game, but also a non gamer is interesting as people who have never gamed before are getting into it for the first time every day, and terraria looks simple on the surface and is one of the best selling games of all time. This could absolutely be their first game.

Maybe things like this will lead the team to better explain some systems, add and improve the tutorial and even tweak some of the things (like from your mage series and how world gen impacts certain crafting recipes).

ALSO props to her having played paper mario. Paper Mario: TYD was amazing.

  5. I honestly hope she has a good time, I can see how it can be frustrating for her ^^"
edit: damn, she has the eyes of an eagle that was blessed by Horus himself

  6. Your wife noticing the skull before the pyramid brings to attention something I haven't noticed anyone else discuss in regards to non gamers playing games, and that's the fact that it can be really hard to tell at times the difference between a decoration, and something useful or even interactable.

  7. She absolutely did great!

This reminds me so much of when I introduced my sister to Terraria, albeit I did so on console. I definitely think that console helped her a lot when I taught her since as we were on the same screen she was able to see what I did and ask me questions why I did so or how she would do it.

  8. I've got a friend I want to introduce to Terraria, and while the Travis series is fun (I love experimenting on friends), I think this is more the route I'll take.
Great video! Your wife did a lot of the same things I did when I was a noob (though where I noticed UI stuff, she noticed everything), so this was a nice hit of nostalgia for me. I hope she plays more and enjoys it. (Also, Florin is a country from The Princess Bride. Evidently, she's cultured.)

  9. I just realized after a year and a half (if not more) of following you that your character has the aot reference cloak dyed red, instead of the base red cloak…

I dont know why it took me this much, im not a great AoT fan, but i recognized it immediately when it was first added in the game…

  10. Having the escape key as default for inventory is definitely an unintuitive and just shows how old the original binds for this game are.

I feel like a lot of new players only discover it because they end up hitting escape so they can check the keybinds menu for the inventory bind.
